The fastener is of a type classified by Wild as a Class I fastener with a solid square-head. This one is unusual as most of the Class I tend to have a double boss-head, but this example only has an undecorated rectangluar plate for the button element. The reverse is flat and has the loop extending out from the back of the head. The loop is formed from a projecting strip of copper alloy, which has a right-angle bend just behind the head, the strip then forks open and would have formed a triangular loop. The loop has broken and the breaks are worn. The entire surface is slightly pitted, but much of the original surface survives. The original metal is a dark greyish-brown colour.
