A complete Post Medieval cast lead alloy seal (17th century). This is a circular disc with a loop for attachment. There is a cast motif on each side. It is slightly miscast as the two halves are not perfectly aligned with some overlap. On one side there is an eagle with outspread wings and on the other side is a garnished shield with crossed tools (probably mortar pestles) on one side and a vessel on the second side. Geoff Egan suggests this seal may have been used on brass vessels as well as wire. Dimensions: length: 36.91mm; diameter: 31.71mm; weight: 19.45g. Identification and dating by Tony Pilson and Ian Smith based on foreshore context Identification by Geoff Egan, PAS Finds Advisor Medieval and Post Medieval Artefacts.
