It is a two part pendant, consisting of an outer circle of metal with two short, straight extensions to a suspension loop, which is now broken Between the two extensions is a short, transverse pin from which hangs a sexfoil shaped pendant with a central hole. This was free-swinging but is now locked by corrosion products. The petal attaching the central flower to the pin is larger than the other five. The inner edge of the outer circle is scalloped to accommodate the petals of the flower. There are traces of gilt remaining on the upper surface of the pendant; the underside is plain. It is 32.9mm long, 19mm wide, and 5.3mm thick. It weighs 5.3gm. A similar example is HAMP-CAE922 on the data base. Harness pendants are generally dated from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, with circular and openwork examples predominating the twelfth century, more varied types in the thirteenth and fourteenth century including the enamelled and heraldic types more commonly (Griffiths, 1995, ‘The Medieval Horse and its Equipment’).
