Rim and neck fragment of stoneware vessel, probably a jug, with part of a stylised face on it. This sherd dates from the post-medieval period (1600-1750) and comes from a style of stoneware vessels known as Bellamine Jugs. The outer surface has an iron-rich brown surface which has been salt-glazed, which produces the mottled brown effect. The interior is a reddish pink colour. The fabric is hard fired and light grey in colour. The exterior bears a face of a bearded man which has been applied. The sherd is 55mm high, 49.37mm wide and the neck wall measures 6.37mm in thickness. It weighs 28.8 grams.
This style of jug was originally used to import alcohol / spirits from the continent (Germany and the low countries) and is named after Cardinal Bellarmine (1542-1621). However, the style of jug was copied and used throughout the post medieval period. The bearded man is thought to represent a 'Wild Man' found in popular European myths of the period.
