Silver pendant shield with an integral loop at the apex, probably a vervel of Lewis and Richardson type C.iii. The shield is engraved on both faces: Fr Man / nock of / giffardes / hall // in Stoke / in Suf. / esquire . Two similar objects are illustrated in the Treasure Annual Report 2004 nos.319-320. The better parallel of the two, no.320 (from Suffolk), is described as being 'possibly from horse harness' which is most unlikely. Edward Martin has kindly supplied the following genealogical data: Francis Mannock Esq. succeeded his father William at Gifford's Hall, Stoke by Nayland, in 1558. He married Mary, daughter of William Fitch of Canfield in Essex. He died 3 Nov. 1590 in his 68th year, buried at Nayland. His grandson, Sir Francis Mannock, 1st Bt, succeeded his father William in 1616. Created a baronet 1627. He and his father were both recusants. Died 20 Nov. 1634, aged 49. Later family includes: Sir Francis 2nd Bt., d. 1687; Sir Francis 4th Bt., d. 1758; and Sir Francis 7th Bt., d. 1778. Arms: Sable, a cross formee flory argent
The owner was clearly either Francis who died in 1590 or his grandson Francis before his elevation to the baronetcy in 1627.
