Half of a post medieval gilded spectacle buckle dating from c. 1550-1650. The remaining loop has a central moulded rosette of five petals flanked on either side by a panel, possibly containing a leaf and tendril decoration, though this is uncertain. Each panel terminates in two transverse grooves. The strap bar is intact and has a lobed knop engraved with three lines and a moulded collar at each end. The pin remains in situ. It is cut from thick sheet and bent round the bar. Traces of gilding remain over a large part of the buckle. It is 48.6mm long, 39.5mm wide, and 7.8mm thick. It weighs 12.12gm. A similar example is number 413 in Whitehead's Buckles 1250-1800, p. 67.
