Treasure report from Dr Dora Thornton: Silver mount with central lobe in the form of a hatched thistlehead, with two projecting bars pierced for attachment to a leather or textile belt. Gilded. The back flat with chasing marks.
Notes:
Similar copper-alloy versions recorded as 15th Century in Egan and Pritchard, Dress Accessories, London 1991, no. 1161, though this one looks a little later, perhaps 16th Century.
As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
Subsequent action after recording: Returned to finder after being disclaimed as Treasure
