ARMOUR AND WEAPONS

Unique ID: LON-93D2A4

Object type certainty: Certain

A Post Medieval - Modern wood and copper alloy ramrod for a muzzle-loading weapon (1760 - 1880). The shaft is made from wood and tapers from 12.08mm to 8.50mm. At the wider end is a flaring copper alloy terminal, this may be the ball-seating cup. At the narrow end is a slightly tapering copper alloy terminal with four ridge and grooves near the end. There is a rivet hole for attachment near the open end. The rivet is non longer present.

Dimensions: Diameter: 12.08mm; length: 905mm; weight: 110.63g.

Notes:

The finder's research notes: if this ramrod is military it will predate 1760, steel replaced wood 1760, if sporting weapon the date will continue to c.1880 (the finder believes this to be the most likely option). This is a ramrod for a muzzle-loading weapon of 0.729" bore or very similar 12bore, the ram rod is 36" in length, therefore barrel must be less than this.

Class: Ramrod
