Silver vervel or hawking ring; small silver ring of D-shaped section engraved on the outside in italic script: *At mounckton in dorsett.

Hawking rings record the owner's name and sometimes their placeof residence, and were attached to the leather jesses on the birds legs which attached the bird to the block. The script and form of this ring can be compared with others in the BM collection and published examples from Norfolk and elsewhere. The vervel dates to the 17th Century.

As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections, The British Museum

Class: Ring
