This example does not easily fit into one of Wild’s classifications. The button element of the fastener is formed from a square plate, decorated with an incised groove, which runs around the edge. There is a raised cross in the centre, with four sunken cells. This would have been enamelled but the enamal does not survive. Attached to the reverse of the plate are two plate lugs, one is broken. These are pierced to hold a pin or ring fitting. Wild suggests that button-and-loop fastener are more likely to be Roman in date than Iron Age, possibly dating from circa AD 150 – 260.
