CLOTH SEAL

Unique ID: BH-EB0DC1

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A damaged lead two-disc cloth seal of post-medieval date. This is a customs seal, issued at Lyon for the exportation of silk. Similar seals have been found in London (see Egan, 1995, p. 102, nos. 299 and 300). The two examples illustrated date from the late 16th and 18th centuries respectively. Both sides of the cloth seal have been stamped and have relief designs. One disc bears an ornamented circular Shield-of-France, containing three fleurs-de-lis; the other disc bears the arms of Lyon, comprising a shield with lion rampant, a chief with three fleurs-de-lis, and the legend (which runs clockwise from 1 o'clock) 'DOANNA DE LYON'. The designs on both sides are contained within pellet borders. The seal measures 18.1mm in diameter, 2.7mm thick and weighs 6.1g.
