Decorative gold ring with a projecting oval bezel of floriate form with 11 'petals', set with a small uncut (cabochon) almandine garnet. Each petal is engraved with a central dot. There is a small transverse ridge on each side of the bezel at the junction with the hoop, decorated with transverse engraved lines. The shoulders are engraved with short lines in a diaper pattern creating lozenges with central dots. The raised bezel measures 7mm x 5.6mm. The hoop is slightly misshapen, now measuring internally 14.6 x 23.7mm. It has a flattened D cross-section, and tapers slightly from the bezel to a width of 1.2mm. Weight 2.5g.
Metal Content
To judge from its colour and weight, and visual comparison with other gold rings and brooches in the collections of the Department of Archaeology & Numismatics, the item is gold (over 10%). This was confirmed by analysis of the metal composition of the ring by Mary Davis using CamScan MaXim 2040 analytical scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX).
The average composition of the gold is:
2% copper
2% silver
96% gold
The stone is a ferriferous almandine (oriental) garnet.
Discussion
The decorative ring from Llanfair has engraved steps either side of the bezel - a feature found on rings dated to the 12th and 13th centuries. The shoulder decoration is very similar to that on a decorative ring set with raised bezel containing an almandine garnet from Llangeler, Carmarthenshire, attributed to the 14th century, and on a similarly dated ring from Holywell, Flintshire (Redknap 2006, 293; Manley and Lewis 1987). However, engraved decoration also occurs on 13th-century finger rings (for example engraved chevrons: Christie's 1989, no. 342; Dalton 1912, no. 1774), while a 13th-century ring with similar proportions to the Llanfair ring from Standish, Gloucestershire, has a garnet-inlaid circular bezel bearing incised vertical lines around its exposed sides (Treasure Annual Report 2002, no. 89). For an earlier ring with engraved decoration on bezel and hoop shoulders, also with a garnet, see Treasure Annual Report 2004, no. 169 from Houghton, West Sussex (attributed to the 12th century).
For an example of a 13th-century decorative ring with small circular bezel set with a small garnet, and inscription on hoop, see Treasure Annual Report 2002, no. 91).
","Summary and conclusions
The ring is of 12th or 13th-century date. It is my opinion that as an object which has at least 10 per cent by weight precious metal, and which is at least 300 years old, the ring is treasure under Section 1 (1) (a) of the Treasure Act 1996.
