A cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late Anglo-Saxon date (c. 11th century AD). The mount is sub-pentagonal in form with a knobbed profile. It has a wide rounded apex loop. From this it widens to its maximum width (28.0mm) at the uppermost pair of side knobs. Below is a further pair of knobs above the straight base. Above the base are two circular perforations, both of these retain corroded iron rivets. The third rivet hole can be found at the apex loop, empty. On the lower face the perpendicular flange is very slight (Th.: 5.8mm). The lower surface is plain, slightly recessed and seemingly unfiled. The upper surface is decorated with what is probably a highly degenerate, abstract version of an engraved pair of symmetrical addorsed beasts beneath a pendent loop. The mount's form is characteristic of a Williams' Class A, Type 1 mount (1997, 26ff.), albeit a highly debased example, and perhaps circumspect no to give it a Type. This artefact now has a dark grey-green patina. The upper element curves forwards slightly in profile. It is likely to date from the first quarter of the 11th century to the early 12th century (Williams 1997, 8).
