RING

Unique ID: HESH-4B9AC5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Cast copper alloy ring (or possibly bead) of probable later prehistoric date (specifically Late Bronze Age - Iron Age 1000 BC – 100 AD). The ring is complete and is broadly circular in plan and sub-oval (lentoid) in cross section. It measures 24.4mm in diameter, is 8.8mm wide, and is 7.9mm thick. The internal hole is roughly central with a diameter of 8.1mm. The ring weighs 20.7 grams. The ring is a mid green colour with a well developed and heavily polished patina which covers all surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. There are several areas where abrasion has removed this patina and light green powdery corrosion has developed. The use of this ring is difficult to interpret. It is difficult to interpret it as a harness fitting as the internal dimensions is rather narrow and the lentoid shape would make it awkward to fit anything substantial. It could (more likely in my opinion) have a decorative use in either harness or similar functional fitting possibly associated with personal dress. No clear parallels have been found for this artefact –as the use of this type of ring is common in most prehistoric and historic periods; this example has been dated solely on the design, weight of the metal and age of the patina. There are a number of rings recorded from the Flag Fen excavations, Peterborough, and although this example is similar to a number (specifically 223-224) the central hole is much narrower in this example.
