Roman copper alloy wing-and-fanbow brooch, missing the catchplate and pin, c. 1st century AD.
The broooch measures 40mm long and is 21mm wide, weighing 2.5g. It has thin, tubular wings which have an incised vertical line on either end. The brooch then extends away from the wings, firstly with a thin rectangular section and then an inverted 'V' section which extends away by 33mm to form the fan.
The bow is decorated two pairs of stamped lines, again in an inverted 'V' shape side by side. The decoration is formed by very small zig-zagged lines. The bow is very thin and is broken (old break) at the end on the left hand side.
The reverse of the bow is plain.
See Hattatt, 1989, pg 312 for similar examples.
