<description>
<full>A cast bronze small socketed axe, possibly of the late Bronze or early Iron Age, but more probably late Iron Age or Roman.

The axe is complete, and shows no evidence of wear. The socket is sub&#45;square in section with moulding around the opening and a loop at the top. There is some iron&#45;like corrosion around the loop, but this may be a result of particular soil conditions that makes bronze corrosion emulate iron corrosion. The body and blade of the axe flare outward from the socket to a fan&#45;shaped blade.

Total length: 48.47mm
Blade width (tip to tip): 35.69mm
Socket diameter: 13.97mm
Socket depth: 16.49mm
Weight: 23.1g</full>

<notes>These small socketed axes are often thought to be very late Bronze Age or early Iron Age, but this object was found in a field that contained only Roman and Medieval artefacts, and may be Roman in date.</notes>
