The axe is complete, and shows no evidence of wear. The socket is sub-square in section with moulding around the opening and a loop at the top. There is some iron-like corrosion around the loop, but this may be a result of particular soil conditions that makes bronze corrosion emulate iron corrosion. The body and blade of the axe flare outward from the socket to a fan-shaped blade.

Total length: 48.47mm
Blade width (tip to tip): 35.69mm
Socket diameter: 13.97mm
Socket depth: 16.49mm
Weight: 23.1g","These small socketed axes are often thought to be very late Bronze Age or early Iron Age, but this object was found in a field that contained only Roman and Medieval artefacts, and may be Roman in date.","","2008-07-08 12:06:17","2011-02-24 13:47:52","4","0","1","2008-06-01","","","","","","1","1","1","","","3","1","","rcollins","Robert Collins","NCL","dpett","Daniel Pett","","Iron","","","Cast","","Complete","","Certain","IRON AGE","ROMAN","","Metal detector","","Dr Robert Collins","","Dr Robert Collins","NORTHUMBERLAND","WHITTINGTON","TYNEDALE","","","","NY9970","NY3957","NY97SE","","","","","","","From Map","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","181275","Howden minisocketed axe.jpg","images/rcollins/",
