Button and Loop Fastener
Unique ID: NCL-70FEC6
Object type certainty: Certain
A cast copper-alloy button and loop fastener, hook piece, of the late Iron Age or early Roman period, probably related to horse harness.
The fastener is nearly complete, but bent. The 'base' end has the underside in an openwork triangle, with semicircular sides holding openwork decoration between them, unconnected to the underside. The decoration consists of two discs with circumscribed circles with traces of enamel and a crescent arcing toward the hook end of the fastener.
A thick arm extends from the underside of the base to the hook end, D-shaped in section.
The hook end has a thick, central projection perpendicular to the arm. At the top of the projection is some worn decoration and subsidiary arms emerging from the projection. Only one of these is complete, and forms an inturned S-shape.
The copper-alloy is slightly ferrous.
