Ring brooch from Marshchapel The brooch consists of a plain ring with an original diameter of c. 26mm and with a 1.7mm diameter cross-section. It is now broken into two pieces, one fracture is jagged, the other cleaner, and retains traces of solder suggesting that it occurred in the area of the original joint. The brooch pin is still present. This tapers from 1.7mm diameter to a point. It is attached to the ring by a 3.2mm diameter, by 4mm wide sleeve. Between the sleeve and the pin is a 4mm diameter collar, the outer edge of which is notched for decorative effect. This object belongs to a well known group of Medieval ring brooches and may be paralleled by the find from Wolverton, Warwickshire for which a date of about 1280-1300 was suggested (Annual Treasure Report 2000, pages 69-70, Fig. 118) but a more open 13th - 14th century dating is perhaps safer. The density, colour and lustre of the metal suggest that it is more than 10% silver and it should therefore be considered as potential Treasure. It has a mass of 2.17g.
