Description: A medieval gold finger-ring, the D-shaped hoop widening to a quatrilobe bezel set with a dark red stone, the shoulders with engraved and punched decoration. Traces of dark transparent enamel survive in the engraved decoration on the shoulders. The stone was identified by Raman spectroscopy as garnet. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the ring indicated a gold content of 80-83%, a silver content of 12-15%, the remainder being copper.
Dimensions: Max diameter, including bezel: 21mm. The find therefore qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content and should go forward to inquest. Beverley Nenk Dept Prehistory and Europe British Museum 4 February 2009
