Coin
Unique ID: IOW-7BB152
Object type certainty: Certain
A complete silver denarius of Tiberius (AD 14-37); PONTIF MAXIM; female seated right, holding vertical sceptre and branch, all above a single line; Mint of Rome. RIC I, p. 95, no. 30.
Notes:
This coin is often referred to as the ‘Tribute Penny’ of the Bible when Jesus asks whose effigy is on a silver coin and says ‘render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s. However, it is quite possible that the silver coin in question was an eastern issue, possibly from Caesarea in Cappadocia.
This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.
