FINGER RING

Unique ID: SWYOR-41D6B7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

"Square-sectioned, oval hooped finger-ring, smoothly swelling profile, with flat bezel set with nicolo intaglio. The intaglio is engraved with a naked male figure standing left, probably Silvanus or a hunger, holding prey (a hare?) in front of him. There is an uncertain device behind the figure. The intaglio is very worn.

Note: the ring has been heavily cleaned.

External diameter: 21.1mm, Internal diameter: 17.2mm, Weight: 5.0g. Date: 2nd to 3rd century AD

Note: this item is made substantially of silver and is more than 300 years old, and thus qualifies as treasure as stipulated in the Treasure Act 1996.

Dr Richard Hobbs Curator, Romano-British Collections, Prehistory & Europe, The British Museum 25th March 2008"

Notes:

A Database user has also commented that:

"The identification of the scene on this ring may be incorrect. The nude male is much more heavily built than in usual depictions of Silanus or other hunters and is more akin to depictions of Hercules. Although hunters are often shown on gems with hares, they are usually shown either in the act of hunting, or after the dispatching them with several slung over the shoulder or hung on a logobolon. Here the beast (it is quite large to be a hare!) is being strangled by the figure, and its large head an tail might fit be meant to represent a lion. Hercules is often shown in the act of strangling the Nemean lion, as this was the only way the beast could be killed, since its skin was impenetrable to any weapon, and this act of strength and bravery emphasizes the hero's super human abilities."
