Unique ID: SUSS-305C44

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Copper alloy object probably a stylus. The object is long and D shaped in cross section and narrows towards one end, the other end has broken from an old break. It was made by rolling thick sheet or a rectangular bar as there is a groove running down the flat side where the edges met. The object measures 75.8mm long, 4.3mm wide, 3.9mm thick and weighs 5.4 grams. It is probably a stylus and the flared, flat end for smoothing wax has broken off.

I think that this is the shank from a rolled sheet metal pin, (cf Meols, Pl. 46, No. 3093). These are dated to the 16th century.
