BUTTON

Unique ID: SUSS-08C046

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find validated and published by finds advisers

Incomplete copper-alloy two-piece button, originally bi-convex and hollow; now only the front and the edge of the back survives. The front and back are made of thin sheet and were soldered together. The front is decorated with a central raised pellet, which is holed and partially missing, surrounded by a dashed circle within an eight pointed star or sun. There are three further concentric circles surrounding the sun, two closely together (the inner of which joins the points of the rays) and one near the edge of the button. The button is now 24.0mm in diameter, 8.0mm thick and weighs 2.1 grams. Read (2005) p. 70-73 illustrates similar examples (e.g. no. 284) and suggests a 17th- to 18th-century date.
