Treasure case no. 2003 T57 (disclaimed). Assessment and report by Malcolm Lyne Arch.Dip.(Lon.), PhD, FSA The 120 coins were quantified by period as per Reece's system (1991) as follows: TABLE 1 Period Date-range No. % Period Date-range No. % 1 Up to 41 3 2.5 12 238-260 6 5.0 2 41-54 - - 13 260-275 48 40.0 3 54-68 1 0.8 14 275-296 21 17.5 4 69-96 - - 15 296-317 2 1.7 5 96-117 - - 16 317-330 - - 6 117-138 1 0.8 17 330-348 11 9.2 7 138-161 1 0.8 18 348-364 4 3.3 8 161-180 - - 19 364-378 15 12.5 9 180-192 - - 20 378-388 - - 10 193-222 1 0.8 21 388-403 - - 11 222-238 - - Illeg 6 5.0 The coin totals in this table were then converted into numbers per 1000 in order to compare with Reece's quantification of coin assemblages from 140 Romano-British sites. What this revealed is that the percentages of coins for periods 12 and 13 (238-275) are abnormally high. Examination of the coins belonging to these two periods leaves little or no doubt that the abnormality is caused by a dispersed hoard deposited c.AD.270. Certain components of this hoard of antoniniani are as follows: Gordian III (238-244). A:2003.40.91, 121 (2 coins) Mariniana (253-260). A:2003.40.95 (1 coin) Valerian I (253-260). A:2003.40.73, 94, 116 (3 coins) Postumus (259-266). A:2003.40.17, 18, 22, 23, 30, 45, 46, 63, 72, 74, 75, 76, 77, 92, 98, 99, 104, 105, 106 (19 coins) All of these coins are in silver alloy The following antoniniani or some of them may also be part of this hoard but are in a more debased cu.alloy Gallienus (258-268). A:2003.40.9, 67, 80, 103 (4 coins) Claudius II (268-270). A:2003.40.19, 27, 34, 48, 51, 54, 84 (7 coins) Postumus (266-268). A:2003.40.6, 7, 8, 21, 71, 93, 108 (7 coins) Postumus or Victorinus (266-270). A:2003.40.11, 107, 111, 118, 120 (5 coins) Victorinus (268-270). A:2003.40.35, 79, 113, 114 (4 coins) Tetricus I (270-273). A:2003.40.13, 49 (2 coins) The varying condition of these coins suggests that the hoard has slowly been dispersed by ploughing over a number of years, with some being disturbed very recently. There has been considerable corrosion of the surfaces of nearly all of the more debased cu.alloy antoniniani and some of the earlier silver alloy ones. The question arises as to whether the hoard is now totally dispersed or the residue of it is still in situ somewhere in the field. As things stand it is a very small hoard of somewhere between 25 and 54 coins. The only other unusual aspect of the coin assemblage is the presence of two heavily debased legionary denarii of Marc Antony struck to pay his troops before the battle of Actium in 31 BC. One of these has a graffito in ?Greek cut into its surface and should be looked at by an epigraphist: Ancient Greek coins given as offerings at shrines sometimes have graffiti. There is nothing particularly unusual about the fourth-century coinage from this site and all could be the result of casual coin loss.
