Collection of Roman ceramic wares collected from one discrete area. The assemblage is essentially early Roman in date with almost all (except for 2-3 items - see *) being mid to late first century AD (c.50-100 AD). Inventory: 4 x sherds of "Abingdon Type" fine white/oxidised wares inc. 1 butt beaker rim, 2 butt beaker bases & 1 rouletted body sherd. 81 sherds of reduced wares (all shades of grey in colouration) which include: - Coarse & fine sand tempered (early) fabrics with at least one butt beaker rim & a butt beaker/girth beaker body sherd with cordon & oblique incised line decoration (quite rough in a locally produced sandy fabric of type R19), 7 other jar or beaker rim fragments. - Miscellaneous grog-tempered (Type E80 & R90) sherds, including 1 large storage jar rim. - A very few (?3-4) sherds in fine reduced fabrics (cf. R11) suggest a date range of c.70-150 AD - these include a single rim from a simple dish of Drag 18/31. * In addition to these early wares the following were also found: 1 x Roman tile fragment of tegula type with 'signature' finger markings - Not closely datable, c.50-400 AD. 1 x Oxfordshire whie mortarium ware rim (type M22) - dated c.240-400 AD. 1 x Oxfordshire colour-coated ware rim sherd from a ?beaker - dated c.240-400.

Notes:

Codes R19, E80, R90, R11 & M22 are taken from Oxford Archaeology's guidelines for recording Roman pottery. "Drag 18/31" - refers to the standard Dragendorff system of recording Roman pottery forms.
