Medieval unidentified object. A cast curving strip folded double to form the shape of a ‘J’, and fixed by two sturdy rivets so that there is a gap of 4.5 to 6mm between the two halves. One end is rounded and the other is missing. On one outer face of one half there are two X-shaped stamped impressions and an engraved line along part of one edge. The rivet nearest the fold lies in the centre of a low rectangular boss on the same outer face. Into this four V-sectioned oblique notches have been filed to produce a lozengiform panel in the centre of which is the rivet. Interestingly this rivet meets the rear part of the strip off-centre so that its hole meets one edge. There are many file marks along the narrow edges. Width of strip 5.5mm. Length 35mm. No good parallel found, and function uncertain. Possibly a book mount.
