A gold mourning ring with inscription to the interior. The finger ring is a plain band with a D-shaped cross-section, the exterior is engraved with a skull. There are possibly some traces of black enamel remaining within the engraved lines of the skull. The internal surface is engraved with the inscription: 'St J N ob 11 Nov 80', followed by the maker's mark: 'RW'. Dimensions: diameter: 20.28mm; width: 3.79mm; thickness: 1.16mm; weight: 2.63g
Notes:
Mourning rings were usually made in memory of a recently deceased relation. Often money was left in wills with which to have a ring commissioned for this purpose. The inscription translates to 'St J N died 11 November 1680', with 'St J N' referring to the deceased. The maker is unidentifiable from those listed by Jackson. A similar finger ring with the engraved skull and slightly different inscription was found in Dunkirk, Kent (TAR 2004: no.316).
