The majority of the gold and silver coins spanned a period from the mid first century BC until the mid 2nd century AD.\r\n\r\nThe group of twenty-four coins appear to represent addenda to the earlier 'Winchester Hoard', discovered by the same finder (published in TAR 2001, no.181). The current coins are consistent with the earlier hoard in terms of their type and condition, and the possibility that they originated at the same site is supported by the fact that the finder was known to have revisited the site on occasions after the discovery of the hoard.\r\n\r\nThe original hoard comprised three Roman Republican period silver denarii, one denarius of Augustus (27 BC-AD 14) and one denarius of Tiberius (AD 14-37). The twenty-four coins belong to the same periods: The earliest is a Republican coin of 113 or 112 BC and the latest are this gold aureus and a silver denarius of Tiberius, both struck between AD 14 and 37. The hoard has gone through the Treasure process as case 2006 T163.","old_findID":"HAMP-CC27E5","id":"197797","objecttype":"Coin","classification":null,"subclass":null,"reuse":null,"created":"2007-10-22 16:44:39","broadperiod":"ROMAN","updated":"2011-02-24 12:18:32","treasureID":"2006 T163","secwfstage":"3","secuid":"001471CC56701DA1","findofnote":"0","objecttypecert":"1","datefound1":"2004-09-01","datefound2":null,"createdBy":"195","curr_loc":"Winchester Museums Service","inscription":null,"reason":null,"subsequentAction":"Acquired by museum after being declared Treasure"}],"record":[{"id":"197797","old_findID":"HAMP-CC27E5","uniqueID":"001471CC56701DA1","objecttype":"Coin","classification":null,"subclass":null,"length":null,"height":null,"width":null,"thickness":null,"diameter":"19","quantity":"1","other_ref":"2006 T163","treasureID":"2006 T163","broadperiod":"ROMAN","numdate1":"36","numdate2":"37","description":"A 1st-century Roman gold aureus of Tiberius (14-37 AD), 'PONTIF MAXIM', struck at Lugdunum (Lyon), AD 14-37 (R.I.C. 27)","notes":"This coin is part of a group of twenty-four Roman Republican and early imperial coins reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme together with other groups of Iron Age and Roman coins in 2005.
