Complete silver ring. The ring takes the form of a plain D-sectioned band. To the inner surface is the inscription 'OBEY GOD'. A gold tinge to the inner surface suggests that the ring was once gilded. No traces of gilt survive to the outer surface. There are no traces of enamel to the inscription.
16th - 17th Century
The hoop has an external diameter of 23.44mm, is 5.18mm wide and 1.66mm thick. The ring weighs 4.65g.
A similar ring (with a different inscription) can be seen in the Treasure Annual Report 2003, number 263.
Notes:
The object contains a minimum of 10% silver and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
