Cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of Kraftig Profilierte type, dating to 43-100AD. The brooch is complete apart from its missing pin. The spring has 6 coils and the external chord is intact. The bow is arched with a pronounced button at its centre. The broad head narrows to a neck before widening into its side wings, but does not cover the spring which is held in place by a forward hook. There is a single terminal knob at the foot which has a collar. The catch plate is complete. The brooch is quite corroded but where it remains, the patina is dark green.

A very similar example is known from Colchester (Crummy 1983, 10 no. 37 fig. 6) and another example can be seen in Hattatt (2000; 325; Fig 184, no. 333.

Notes:

This type of brooch is known to have come from Pannonia; an area on the Danube-Rhine frontier. It is thought that 1st century brooches of this type came to England with the 9th Legion who were drafted from Pannonia. This type of brooch are more commonly found in the east of England so it is interesting that this example was found in the north-west.

This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.
