possible cast lead or lead alloy cloth seal. The seal is probably made from two discs, but it does not have the corresponding joining stud and perforation as is usual. Instead they seem to overlap, which makes it difficult to affix to cloth. The object is sub-circular in plan and the upper surface has a sub-circular platform with high-relief lettering reading ‘YO[ ] / HE[ ]’. The edges are rounded with one portion of the edge having a slender rectangular protrusion which may have originally formed a ribbon. The reverse is undecorated. The object has a light brown patina. The object measures 17.18mm long, 13.76mm wide and 3.64mm thick. It weighs 2.6g. The object closely resembles a cloth seal, but it is not clear how it would be secured to the cloth. If it is a cloth seal, it will date to the 14th and 18th centuries (Egan, G. 1989 ‘Leaden Seals for Textiles – Some Archaeological Evidence Relating to Fabric and Trade’ Costume No. 23) and used as a form of quality control.

I believe this should probably be read as YOR/KE. It may relate to the city itself or to the county of Yorkshire, see HAMP-C2E516 and YORYM-32E807.
