Silver siliqua (unclipped) of Jovian (363-4) (Reece Period 18),VOT V MVLT X, Lyon, AD 363-4. RIC VIII, p. 196, not recorded. Coin Hoards of Roman Britain, vol X, p. 472, no. 40. The obverse legend is unusual - D N IOVIANV - S PEP AVG.

Notes:

This is appears to be only the second siliqua of Jovian recorded for the Lyon mint. The other example was found in the Whitwell Hoard (Rutland) between 1991 and 1993 and is now in the British Museum (CHRB X, p. 472, no. 40; BM 1992, 9.4.2). RIC VIII (p. 196) suggested that such coins might exist, but recorded none. These two surviving specimens were struck from different dies. The Whitwell coin is heavier at 1.82 g. than the Eartham piece at 1.13 g. It is clear that the reverse was one engraved for use on coins of the previous emperor, Julian (360-3; see RIC VIII, p. 195, no. 229), so Lyons quickly issued coins for Jovian when they heard from the Persian frontier that he was the new emperor, not bothering to engrave a new reverse type.
