POT SHERD

Pottery stamped handle with four parallel linear stamps below the flat rim. This is most likely from a pottery jug or flagon, imitating Roman pewter flagons, so a Romano-British derivative. The fabric is is a light orangey brown colour throughout and contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The exterior surface has been black-coated but only on either side of the decoration, where the handle attaches to the neck of the vessel. The handle is similar to a pottery jug containing a Roman cremation, recently excavated from Tregony parish (Carl Thorpe pers comm). Carlyon (1985) illustrates a similar flagon handle with ridges, imitating the metal form, from Carvossa on page 39, Group 45a, No.170, and another with pairs of stamps running down the length of the handle on No.91, which date from c.AD 150-300.
