Square gilt copper alloy and garnet disc brooch. A flat-backed plate in the form of four roundels in a square arrangement with a raised central lozenge; on the front surface each roundel is defined by a central circular drilled hole, in one case piercing the thickness of the metal, surrounded by two concentric grooves of V-shaped profile. At the centre of each of the edges of the plate, where the roundels touch, are four smaller circular settings or cloisons which protrude slightly beyond the outer limits of the roundels. Each tapers slightly towards its upper edge and is set with a flat-topped garnet held in place by the overturned rim of the enclosing metal; each of the garnets has a plain white backing. The reverse retains a hinged pin lug encrusted with iron corrosion (from the missing pin) which extends across much of the reverse, and a catch, the position of each is in axial alignment with the obverse design. The object, which is in good condition, is most likely of continental Frankish or Merovingian origin.
