Weight

Unique ID: SWYOR-41C907

Object type certainty: Probably

An iron sub-circular disc which is probably a weight. There is a central plug which may be copper alloy. The plug is not corroded and the surface is smooth. The edge of the object is corroded and the surfaces are pitted. It is not clear whether there were ever any markings on the surface. The surface of the iron is rough. There is one deep hole near the edge of the disc which is very rusty. It is not clear whether the hole is original or whether it is just a localised area of invasive corrosion. There is a corresponding hole in the same place on the other side which is less corroded. The two hollows do not join. The object currently weighs 1.2oz. If it was a weight it must have originally been an ounce and a half, or a very reduced 2oz weight. The object probably dates from the nineteenth century. It has a diameter of 41mm and is 6.25mm thick. Flat iron circular weights can be seen in Biggs (1998) Antique Weights.
