Object type certainty: Certain
Gold Aureus of Tiberius (AD14-37), PONTIF MAXIM, Mint of Lyon, AD14-37. RIC I, no. 29; BMC I, no. 46
Notes:
An unusual find for NE Suffolk - this could either have arrived with the army post-AD 43, the findspot is c.1.5km off the Roman road, or it might just be evidence of pre-conquest contacts, eg there are some substantial LIA centres on the Waveney. 15 gold aurei of this type struck for Tiberius were found in the Bredgar Hoard in 1957. The hoard of 34 coins ended with coins of Claudius dated AD41-2, so it has been suggested that the hoard was buried by a soldier during or shortly after the Claudian landings at Richborough in AD43.
This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.
