It consists of a three-finned spike which tapers to a point at one end, while at the other is connected, through a narrowing shoulder, into a decorative terminal. The terminal takes the form of the head of a fabulous beast with a short elephant-like trunk and a simple interlace collar around its neck; the spike protruding from its open mouth. The animal head terminal is incomplete being broken across the neck of the beast. Study of this break shows evidence of the ends of three or four integral rivets which have also broken and presumably once connected the spike to whatever it was attached to. The style of the animal head terminal, although superficially similar to medieval and Viking iconography, is suggestive of a Victorian or early twentieth century date (medieval revivalism was popular during this period).
