The head of the brooch, which in profile is sharply turned down from the bow, accommodates a hinged pin and two projecting cylindrical wings. The end of one wing is missing; however, the end of the complete wing is notched. Part of a lug, which probably formed an integrally cast chain loop, projects from the top of the brooch's head. Only the upper part of the hinged pin survives. The upper half of the bow forms a petal-shaped plate embellished with three recessed panels, which presumably accommodated enamel decoration. The lower half of the bow is distorted and incomplete but part of a catchplate remains intact. As a type the T-shaped bow brooch is a rather general grouping which encompasses nearly forty sub-types, several of which are demonstrably localised in their distribution. Unfortunately, the lack of published parallels for this example prevents the closer identification of its sub-type. T-shaped brooches remained in vogue from the mid first century AD to the second century AD and occur most commonly in southern Britain. Cf. Hattatt 1987, 100-116, nos.906-932, figs.37-39.
