THIMBLE

Unique ID: WAW-F98932

Object type certainty: Certain

A possibly cast copper alloy thimble. The rim reveals the thimble has a single shell. The rim is sub-circular due to damage, and is 1.35mm thick. In profile the sides of the thimble taper gradually to a convex top. The exterior has deep, conical cells which are positioned in rows and continue to cover the top. The rim is undecorated as the indentations continue down to the lower edge. The exterior and interior surfaces have a shiny mid grey patina. It is 19.85mm long and 19.99mm wide at the base. It weighs 6.01g.

The thimble is dated to the Medieval or late Post Medieval. Holmes (Holmes, E.F. 'Sewing Thimbles' Datasheet 9 finds Research Group) in figure 2b illustrates a similar shaped and decorated thimble which he dates to the 15th to mid 16th century. Egan (Egan G. 2005 Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition Museum of London and English Heritage) illustrates a similar thimble with square cells, No. 630, which dates to the 16th century.
