"14436","NMGW170","0013EA16123018AC","socketed axehead","South Wales/Stogursey Type","","72.5","","41","","","1","NMGWPA:99.38.2","","BRONZE AGE","-1020","-800","Small and slender South Wales or Stougursey Type socketed axe, which exhibits the characteristic features of the type: namely evidence for a four runner casting technology, a thin and inwards curving mouth moulding, a high placed loop extending from the moulding, and a three rib decorative motif extending from the moulding down the faces of the axe. The four runners on this axe are well filed and the ribs down each face are rather worn. The axe has a sub-rectangular socket and sides which only diverge very slightly at the blade end, the blade being expanded and showing some recurving. At the top of the bevelled blade surface hammer marks are visible, and a series of concentric and curved striations nearer the blade edge indicate that the edge was sharpened for use. The axe has a green patina, with black patches of coloration between the ribs. There is a small amount of damage to part of the blade surface, possibly caused by corrosion and removal from the soil, however the full blade width can be calculated as being 41mm. The soil from the socket of the axe was removed by an archaeological conservator, but produced no evidence for surviving wooden haft fragments. Date: 1020-800 Cal BC (Ewart Park phase). Length 72.5mm, blade width 41mm, depth of socket c.49.5mm, internal socket dimensions 27.5mm x 24mm, external socket dimensions 40.mm x 34mm, weight 120.4 grams.","Part of a hoard of nine Late Bronze Age socketed axes. Following the removal of two of the axes, including this one, by the finder the remainder were excavated by archaeologists from the National Museums & Galleries of Wales (see: Treasure Hunting, November 1999, pages 42-44 for an anecdotal account of the discovery). Excavation revealed that the axes had been deliberately deposited in a shallow pit during antiquity, which had been truncated in the recent past. The pit was apparently isolated; geophysical survey of the vicinity indicated no sign of further activity in the adjacent area. The axes were probably designed for use in carpentry and woodland management. The reason for burying the axes in a pit is not certain; they may have been collected for their scrap value in preparation for recycling or deposited as a votive offering as part of a prehistoric religious ritual.","","1999-10-18 00:00:00","2011-02-24 12:19:17","3","","1","1999-07-09","","","","","1","1","","","","","3","3","","agwilt","Adam Gwilt","NMGW","dpett","Daniel Pett","","","","","Cast","","","Requiring conservation","Certain","BRONZE AGE","","","Metal detector","","","","","NEWPORT","","Newport","","","","","ST3319","ST39SE","","","","","","South Wales","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","",
