STRAP END

A copper alloy strap end. Only a single plate remains of the strap end. It is sub-rectangular in plan. One terminal has a convex edge with a small knop at the terminal. Riveted to the underside of this terminal is a short spacer. The opposite terminal has a moulded edge with three holes forming a ā€˜Vā€™ shape. There are two other, smaller holes which are probably rivet holes, whereas the other three are probably decorative. The upper surface is decorated with a white metal alloy, otherwise the surface of the strap end has a dark green patina. The strap end measures 48.49mm long and 19.35mm wide. It weighs 6.6g. Egan and Pritchard (Egan and Pritchard 2002 Dress Accessories Boydell Press) illustrate a variety of strap ends which have decorated terminals and short spacers, for example Nos. 696, 698, 674, and 671. These date from the late 13th to 14th centuries.
