Shot of comparable size and weight was not recovered from the excavations at Beeston Castle, Cheshire (Courtney 1993, 159) although some small shot with a diameter of 14mm was recovered from excavations at Sandal Castle, Wakefield where it was variously identified as possibly being ammunition for either pistols or carbines, random scatter from canister shot, or possibly shot from an arquebus or caliver, and dated to the Civil War (Credland 1983, 261). Variation in the size of shot may have been due to problems in either the supply of lead of the variation in calibre of weapons used by local militias (Courtney 1993, 159). Dating is difficult but lead shot is certainly no earlier than the sixteenth century and is possibly significantly later.
