The slightly ovoid shape of the ball may have been caused during firing; however, the lack of significant deformation suggests that the shot did not impact with its target. Shot of comparable size and weight has been identified for use with a musket and dated to the Civil War (Credland 1983, 261). Shot of this size would have been too small for ideal use as musket shot; however, its small size may have been due to problems in either the supply of lead of the variation in calibre of weapons used by local militias (Courtney 1993, 159). Dating is difficult but lead shot is certainly no earlier than the sixteenth century and is possibly significantly later.
