Shot of comparable size and weight has been identified for use with a musket and dated to the Civil War (Credland 1983, 261).  Shot of this size would have been too small for ideal use as musket shot; however, its small size may have been due to problems in either the supply of lead of the variation in calibre of weapons used by local militias (Courtney 1993, 159).
