The wedge looks initially like an iron axe head, but the cutting edge of the axe, is extremely blunt suggesting that it has been used repeatedly to split logs. The repeated hammering on the other end of the wedge would have caused the cutting edge to become blunt. The butt end of the wedge is broken. The iron is extremely corroded.
