2006-05-15 11:38:41 Mark Lodwick mlodwick 2011-02-24 12:19:17 Daniel Pett dpett NMGW-85A1F6 Bow brooch Roman copper alloy bow brooch of T-shaped variant type and probably dating to the 2nd century AD The brooch is incomplete, missing the leg and has a surviving length of 27.01mm and weighs 7.9g. The brooch employed a spring mechanism secured by a Polden Hill type arrangement around a copper alloy axis bar. The chord was tensioned through a perforated lug on the head. The wings have a width of 26.11mm. The ends of the wings are angled to the rear and the front is decorated with vertical mouldings. The perforated lug has a smaller decorative (solid) lug in front. The head projects horizontally (for 9.3mm, with a width of 9.3mm), before turning at a right angle to the front of the bow. The bow is of rectangular section with straight sides converging towards the leg. The bow is decorated with three rectangular recessed cells, which would have held enamel. The panel has a grooved border. Two leaf mouldings are present on the bow before the break, where the bow is of D-shaped section. The brooch has good surface preservation with a dark green patina and evidence of silvering or tinning over much of the brooch. The forward projecting head is unusual and difficult to parallel.
