Complete cast lead two disc cloth seal of probable seventeenth century date (AD 1600 – AD 1700). Length 24mm. Both discs are about 18mm in diameter. Maximum thickness 4mm. Weight 6.03g. Disc1, with an integral rivet at the rear, is slightly convex at the front and has a “spontaneous” design of four incised linear grooves that form six sub-rectangles. Disc 2 is flat and has a central aperture through which the rivet of disc 1 passes. The rivet is burred over. It is in fair condition.

Lead seals were put on commercially produced cloths as part of a complicated system of industrial regulation, known in England as the alnage, under which quality control and the levying of tax of a few pence per newly manufactured cloth was administered until 1724 (Egan, G. 1994).
