SLEEVE CLASP

Unique ID: NLM4253

Object type certainty: Certain

Fragment of a Style I florid cruciform brooch, traces of gilding. Anglo-Saxon.

Helen Geake writes:

The image attached to this record appears to be that of a fragment of Hines Form C1 wrist-clasp, with relief decoration. What survives to be illustrated is part of a 'Mildenhall type'; the profile neck and head of a Style I predatory bird curled tightly around, with the beak coiled into a central spiral. The neck is decorated with a line of running spirals ending in two square blocks each with an incomplete median groove. See Hines 1993, fig. 130, which has two very similar examples from Mildenhall in Suffolk and Spong Hill in Norfolk.

The Object Type has accordingly been changed from 'Brooch' to 'Sleeve Clasp' and the classification and sub-classification added. This re-identification does not affect the date, which is still broadly sixth century.

Class: Hines Form C1
