Sherd from the base of a partially glazed Midlands Purple Ware pottery vessel, probably a jug or storage jar of post medieval date 1600 – 1700. The fabric of the sherds is a very hard earthenware with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit, quartz, coal and broken burnt pottery inclusions. The fabric colour is mid grey purple and the inner and outer surfaces of both sherds are a mottled purple brown. This two-tone effect has been caused by low temperatures within the kiln and is typical of early pottery. A light grey colour slip has been applied to both the inner and outer surfaces of the vessel. A mottled mid brown shiny glaze has been applied only to the inner base of the sherd. The diameter of the base of the vessel is estimated at 260mm. The angle between the base of the pot and the sloping side is approximately 55º. There is not enough of the body of the pot surviving to give an estimation of the depth or overall form/shape of the vessel. The sherd measures 32.4mm length, 45.9mm width, is 25.6mm high, the base is 9.8mm thick and the side wall is 5.6mm thick. The sherd weighs 26.87 grams.
